Please note that attendance is mandatory for new users, in order to be allowed to start using our systems. The next introductory seminar will be on October 9.
2014-08-25 UPDATE 2: Beda status: Beda login node is available again, with limited amount of memory, and the server will need some more maintenance later this week.
2014-08-25 UPDATE: Beda status: Currently the Beda login node is unavailable due to hardware problems. Troubleshooting is ongoing.
2014-08-25 Power failure on Glenn: We had a power failure on Glenn during Sunday evening. All running jobs were lost. (They've been re-queued, but unless they were saving intermediate data, results was also lost.)
2014-08-19 Login problems: Due to problems with Chalmers central servers, there are currently problems logging in to Beda and Glenn. See the ITS status page for more info.
2014-08-11 New update on file system issues: We have just reopened Glenn for login. The file system is finally back up and both Beda and Glenn should be working normally. (Note that there are a number of down nodes since the power outage last week.) Please contact C3SE support if you see strange behaviour on the system, especially regarding files. We are sorry for the trouble this unplanned stop may have caused. PREVIOUS: Current status is as yesterday, i.e. the storage system still isn't fully functional. Parts of /c3se are still unavailable on both Beda and Glenn. We have blocked Glenn for logins, at the moment. We believe there's a good chance the system will be back online later today.
2014-08-10 Sunday update on file system issues: The storage system isn't fully functional, unfortunately. Parts of /c3se are unavailable on both Beda and Glenn.
2014-08-09 Saturday update on file system issues: The system should be up and running, but there are issues left, and it will take some time for everything to settle down. There may be strange behaviours.
2014-08-08 Evening update on file system issues: Unfortunately no change. The centre storage system is still down. We have been working together with the vendor, but the system is not yet running. This means Glenn is still unavailable for login, and jobs on Beda can't use directories (storage -- $SNIC_BACKUP and $SNIC_NOBACKUP -- and applications) under /c3se.
2014-08-07 File system issues: The centre storage system is currently unavailable. We are working to restore it. This means files under /c3se, including the Glenn home directories, are unavailable, and thus, it's not possible to login to Glenn at all. Unfortunately, all running jobs on Glenn are probably lost, since they lost the file system.
2014-08-07 Update on power failure: The situation is more or less like yesterday. We are making slow progress with the storage issues, together with the vendor. We can't offer a prognosis for when this will be solved -- it's a technical problem, not a specific amount of work, and it will be solved when we identify the root cause of the problem.
2014-08-06 Update on power failure: As yesterday, Beda is (mostly) up and running, with some nodes still offline due to memory errors etc, but Glenn is still having storage issues. We are working with the storage system vendor to solve this. Around 160 nodes are currently up on Glenn.
2014-08-05 Update on power failure: Beda is up and running, but Glenn is still partly down. This is due to storage issues, specifically a large number of nodes that cannot access /c3se, where the home directories are mounted. We are working on this.
2014-08-04 Update: Most of Beda is up and running, and parts of Glenn. We are still working on network and storage issues. Please contact C3SE support if the system misbehaves. PREVIOUS: Power failure: Due to thunderstorms on Sunday afternoon and evening, most of both Glenn and Beda lost power. We are working to bring the systems back up.
2014-07-31 Power problem: We had a power problem with rack 6 of Glenn tonight. glenn[57-71]-[1-4] lost power, and so jobs running on those nodes may have failed. Some jobs may have been restarted, of course. The nodes are up and running again, and we've taken steps to prevent the same problem happening again.
2014-06-11 Service stop completed. We have finished moving to the new storage system and upgraded Slurm. Both Beda and Glenn are now back to normal operation.
2014-06-09 C3SE Centre Storage move and full stop on Glenn. On Monday, June 9, we will begin switching centre storage systems. This impacts the Glenn home directories, and we will therefore do a full system stop on Glenn. From 08:00 on June 9, no jobs will run on Glenn. We will also upgrade the Slurm queuing system, which will require us to empty the job queue completely. Jobs that finish before 08:00 June 9 can be run up to the deadline, but all pending jobs will be deleted at that time. Beda will still be available, but the SNIC_BACKUP / SNIC_NOBACKUP directories (under /c3se) will not be available until the new centre storage system is up. We will gradually re-enable users to run on Glenn and use /c3se directories as we bring the new storage system up with migrated user data.

2014-01-20 PRACE: Call for Proposals for Tier-1 access: DECI-12, closing date 20 January 2014: The Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe (PRACE) invites European researchers to apply for access to powerful national (Tier-1) computing resources in Europe. Proposals from academia and industry are eligible, as long as the project leader is undertaking non-proprietary research. Project leaders will typically be employed in research organisations (academic or industrial). Proposals must deal with complex, demanding, innovative simulations that would not be possible without Tier-1 access. The PRACE DECI calls provide single project cross-national access to national HPC resources (Tier-1). Access will be awarded for a period of 12 months. Allocations are available on architectures such as Cray XE, Cray XC30, IBM Blue Gene/Q, Intel and PowerPC Clusters (various processor and memory configurations) and hybrid systems (clusters with GPGPU accelerators). Applicants need not specify a particular machine or architecture, but if they do, their preferences will be taken into account. Calls for proposals for Tier-1 access are issued twice a year.

2013-07-13 Update on storage problems: The file system checks are still running. No change in system status, i.e. Glenn is offline, Beda is online but $SNIC_BACKUP, $SNIC_NOBACKUP and all directories under /c3se, including most commercial software installations, are unavailable.
2013-07-12 Noon update on storage problems: The file system checks are still running. They run in three stages, and stage 2 is nearly finished. We still hope to bring the systems back online by Monday.
2013-07-11 Afternoon UPDATE on storage problems: Thanks for your patience this week. We fully appreciate how frustrating it is to have your files and work unavailable, and are doing our level best to bring everything back online. We will continue working during the weekend, but will update this page less frequently. Based on the progress of the file system checks, we believe the systems may be coming back online on Monday. Please note that this is not a promise. OLDER INFO: The file system checks are still running on the storage system. They are taking a long time, due to the size of the file system. We currently don't expect the system to be available this week. In other words: Glenn will not be available this week, and Beda will not have $SNIC_BACKUP, $SNIC_NOBACKUP and all application installations under /c3se (most commercial software) available. We're aware that many of you have deadlines of various kinds, and we're sorry for the problems caused by this. Still, the file system checks are necessary to make sure we don't suffer data corruption or data loss when we re-enable access to the system. Those of you using Beda, please note the news item below.
2013-07-11 At 17:30 Chalmers ITSInfrastructure will upgrade a central router. This will cause a network downtime of 5-10 minutes. During the upgrade no C3SE resources will be reachable.
2013-07-10 UPDATE on storage problems: At 17:00, the software update part is finally finished. We are now running file system checks to ensure there are no errors in the file system. This will take time. OLDER INFO: Unfortunately, we still aren't ready to bring the storage system and Glenn back online. Work is ongoing, but there's been some complications. We are sorry for the inconvenience, and we are working with the vendor to get the system back online. Glenn is offline and unavailable for login, Beda is online but $SNIC_BACKUP, $SNIC_NOBACKUP and all application installations under /c3se (most commercial software) are unavailable.
2013-07-09 At 17:30, we're still working on the storage system. It will not be ready by tomorrow morning. Maintenance is still going on, with software updates being applied to the storage system. Glenn and the /c3se directories will not be available today, but we hope to get them up by tomorrow. We'll update as we know more. We are doing work on the storage system today, and Glenn is offline. You will not be able to log in to Glenn and no jobs are running. Beda is available for login, and jobs that do not use data from the /c3se directories will be able to run. $SNIC_BACKUP, $SNIC_NOBACKUP and all application installations under /c3se (most commercial software) are unavailable.
2013-07-08 We are currently having problems with the centre storage system. UPDATE: The storage system is up and running, but there are errors in the file system. We will have to run error checks on the file systems, which will take some time. We are currently planning this work. We have stopped new jobs from running on Glenn while we work on the file system. You can still log in, but not run jobs. The problems are due to a disk controller failure. All files on the centre storage (under /c3se - i.e. home directories on Glenn, $SNIC_BACKUP, $SNIC_NOBACKUP, all application installations on Glenn and some on Beda) are affected. We are working to restore the system to normal operations. Typical symptoms are missing files, strange characters in file listings, and I/O errors. On Beda, home directories and many application installations are unaffected, but data under the /c3se directory may be affected.
2013-06-28 We had some severe problems with the centre storage in the afternoon (mainly affecting Glenn, but to some extent also Beda).
2013-06-18 Network rerouting: At 08:00 Chalmers ITS will reroute all of our incoming connections, you might get logged out and have a hard time reaching us for a moment. Should be OK again by 08:30.
