2015-04-30: System stop: Between April 30 and May 6 we will have a full system stop on Glenn and the Hebbe pilot system, and a partial system stop on Beda. During this time, we will install a replacement and expansion for our centre storage system, and copy data from the old system. This requires us to unmount /c3se from the systems, making home-directories, $HOME, $SNIC_BACKUP and $SNIC_NOBACKUP unavailable. Glenn and the Hebbe pilot will be unavailable for login and no jobs will run during the stop. Beda will be available for login, the home directory will be available and jobs that do not access anything under /c3se (note that some applications are installed under /c3se) will be able to run. Do not hesitate to contact C3SE support if you have any questions or need assistance. Please remove files you no longer need, and either remove or archive directories with many small files, in order to help us speed up the move.

2014-08-25: UPDATE 2: Beda status: Beda login node is available again, with limited amount of memory, and the server will need some more maintenance later this week.
2014-08-25: UPDATE: Beda status: Currently the Beda login node is unavailable due to hardware problems. Troubleshooting is ongoing.
2014-08-25: Power failure on Glenn: We had a power failure on Glenn during Sunday evening. All running jobs were lost. (They've been requeued, but unless they were saving intermediate data, results was also lost.)
2014-08-19: Login problems: Due to problems with Chalmers central servers, there are currently problems logging in to Beda and Glenn. See the ITS status page for more info.
2014-08-11: New update on file system issues: We have just reopened Glenn for login. The file system is finally back up and both Beda and Glenn should be working normally. (Note that there are a number of down nodes since the power outage last week.) Please contact C3SE support if you see strange behaviour on the system, especially regarding files. We are sorry for the trouble this unplanned stop may have caused. PREVIOUS: Current status is as yesterday, i.e. the storage system still isn't fully functional. Parts of /c3se are still unavailable on both Beda and Glenn. We have blocked Glenn for logins, at the moment. We believe there's a good chance the system will be back online later today.
2014-08-10: Sunday update on file system issues: The storage system isn't fully functional, unfortunately. Parts of /c3se are unavailable on both Beda and Glenn.
2014-08-09: Saturday update on file system issues: The system should be up and running, but there are issues left, and it will take some time for everything to settle down. There may be strange behaviours.
2014-08-08: Evening update on file system issues: Unfortunately no change. The center storage system is still down. We have been working together with the vendor, but the system is not yet running. This means Glenn is still unavailable for login, and jobs on Beda can't use directories (storage -- $SNIC_BACKUP and $SNIC_NOBACKUP -- and applications) under /c3se.
2014-08-07: File system issues: The center storage system is currently unavailable. We are working to restore it. This means files under /c3se, including the Glenn home directories, are unavailable, and thus, it's not possible to login to Glenn at all. Unfortunately, all running jobs on Glenn are probably lost, since they lost the file system.
2014-08-07: Update on power failure: The situation is more or less like yesterday. We are making slow progress with the storage issues, together with the vendor. We can't offer a prognosis for when this will be solved -- it's a technical problem, not a specific amount of work, and it will be solved when we identify the root cause of the problem.
2014-08-06: Update on power failure: As yesterday, Beda is (mostly) up and running, with some nodes still offline due to memory errors etc, but Glenn is still having storage issues. We are working with the storage system vendor to solve this. Around 160 nodes are currently up on Glenn.
2014-08-05: Update on power failure: Beda is up and running, but Glenn is still partly down. This is due to storage issues, specifically a large number of nodes that cannot access /c3se, where the home directories are mounted. We are working on this.
2014-08-04: Update: Most of Beda is up and running, and parts of Glenn. We are still working on network and storage issues. Please contact C3SE support if the system misbehaves. PREVIOUS: Power failure: Due to thunderstorms on Sunday afternoon and evening, most of both Glenn and Beda lost power. We are working to bring the systems back up.
2014-07-31: Power problem: We had a power problem with rack 6 of Glenn tonight. glenn[57-71]-[1-4] lost power, and so jobs running on those nodes may have failed. Some jobs may have been restarted, of course. The nodes are up and running again, and we've taken steps to prevent the same problem happening again.
2014-06-11: Service stop completed. We have finished moving to the new storage system and upgraded Slurm. Both Beda and Glenn are now back to normal operation.
2014-06-09: C3SE Centre Storage move and full stop on Glenn. On Monday, June 9, we will begin switching center storage systems. This impacts the Glenn home directories, and we will therefore do a full system stop on Glenn. From 08:00 on June 9, no jobs will run on Glenn. We will also upgrade the Slurm queuing system, which will require us to empty the job queue completely. Jobs that finish before 08:00 June 9 can be run up to the deadline, but all pending jobs will be deleted at that time. Beda will still be available, but the SNIC_BACKUP / SNIC_NOBACKUP directories (under /c3se) will not be available until the new center storage system is up. We will gradually re-enable users to run on Glenn and use /c3se directories as we bring the new storage system up with migrated user data.

2014-01-30: E-science Seminar: PRACE for SNIC users
Lilit Axner, PDC Center for High Performance Computing, KTH Royal Institute of Technology
Lilit is the SNIC centers coordinator within PRACE Infrastructure and a Researcher/Project manager at PDC. She will discuss the opportunities PRACE provides for access to higher level compute systems as well as the availability of advanced software support.

She writes: "In my presentation I will give a small introductory of PRACE Infrastructure, explain SNIC activities within PRACE. The main goal of the talk will be to explain the multiple possibilities PRACE opens for SNIC users to access Tier-1 and Tier-0 systems across Europe through its periodic application calls. Through these calls SNIC users get
a) Additional compute time
b) Possibility to access the wide range of compute architecture that may not exist in Sweden.
c) Additional help (up to 6 months) from PRACE application experts
I will give an introductory for call application processes both from applicants and PRACE staff perspectives and will try to answers the questions from the audience. I will also present some statistics for SNIC in the PRACE calls."

The EDIT-room (room 3364) is a seminar room on floor 3 in the EDIT building, near the Cafe and the "lens" – easiest access is from the stairs in the inner yard.

2014-01-20: PRACE: Call for Proposals for Tier-1 access: DECI-12, closing date 20 January 2014: The Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe (PRACE) invites European researchers to apply for access to powerful national (Tier-1) computing resources in Europe. Proposals from academia and industry are eligible, as long as the project leader is undertaking non-proprietary research. Project leaders will typically be employed in research organisations (academic or industrial). Proposals must deal with complex, demanding, innovative simulations that would not be possible without Tier-1 access. The PRACE DECI calls provide single project cross-national access to national HPC resources (Tier-1). Access will be awarded for a period of 12 months. Allocations are available on architectures such as Cray XE, Cray XC30, IBM Blue Gene/Q, Intel and PowerPC Clusters (various processor and memory configurations) and hybrid systems (clusters with GPGPU accelerators). Applicants need not specify a particular machine or architecture, but if they do, their preferences will be taken into account. Calls for proposals for Tier-1 access are issued twice a year.

The closing date for the present call (DECI-12) is 20 January 2014, 17:00 CET
Allocation start date: 1 May 2014
Allocation period: 1 year
Type of access: DECI (Tier-1)

2013-07-13: Update on storage problems: The file system checks are still running. No change in system status, i.e. Glenn is offline, Beda is online but $SNIC_BACKUP, $SNIC_NOBACKUP and all directories under /c3se, including most commercial software installations, are unavailable.
2013-07-12: Noon update on storage problems: The file system checks are still running. They run in three stages, and stage 2 is nearly finished. We still hope to bring the systems back online by Monday.
2013-07-11: Afternoon UPDATE on storage problems: Thanks for your patience this week. We fully appreciate how frustrating it is to have your files and work unavailable, and are doing our level best to bring everything back online. We will continue working during the weekend, but will update this page less frequently. Based on the progress of the file system checks, we believe the systems may be coming back online on Monday. Please note that this is not a promise. OLDER INFO: The file system checks are still running on the storage system. They are taking a long time, due to the size of the file system. We currently don't expect the system to be available this week. In other words: Glenn will not be available this week, and Beda will not have $SNIC_BACKUP, $SNIC_NOBACKUP and all application installations under /c3se (most commercial software) available. We're aware that many of you have deadlines of various kinds, and we're sorry for the problems caused by this. Still, the file system checks are necessary to make sure we don't suffer data corruption or data loss when we re-enable access to the system. Those of you using Beda, please note the news item below.
2013-07-11: At 17:30 Chalmers ITSInfrastructure will upgrade a central router. This will cause a network downtime of 5-10 minutes. During the upgrade no C3SE resources will be reachable.
2013-07-10: UPDATE on storage problems: At 17:00, the software update part is finally finished. We are now running file system checks to ensure there are no errors in the file system. This will take time. OLDER INFO: Unfortunately, we still aren't ready to bring the storage system and Glenn back online. Work is ongoing, but there's been some complications. We are sorry for the inconvenience, and we are working with the vendor to get the system back online. Glenn is offline and unavailable for login, Beda is online but $SNIC_BACKUP, $SNIC_NOBACKUP and all application installations under /c3se (most commercial software) are unavailable.
2013-07-09: At 17:30, we're still working on the storage system. It will not be ready by tomorrow morning. Maintenance is still going on, with software updates being applied to the storage system. Glenn and the /c3se directories will not be available today, but we hope to get them up by tomorrow. We'll update as we know more. We are doing work on the storage system today, and Glenn is offline. You will not be able to log in to Glenn and no jobs are running. Beda is available for login, and jobs that do not use data from the /c3se directories will be able to run. $SNIC_BACKUP, $SNIC_NOBACKUP and all application installations under /c3se (most commercial software) are unavailable.
2013-07-08: We are currently having problems with the centre storage system. UPDATE: The storage system is up and running, but there are errors in the file system. We will have to run error checks on the file systems, which will take some time. We are currently planning this work. We have stopped new jobs from running on Glenn while we work on the file system. You can still log in, but not run jobs. The problems are due to a disk controller failure. All files on the centre storage (under /c3se - i.e. home directories on Glenn, $SNIC_BACKUP, $SNIC_NOBACKUP, all application installations on Glenn and some on Beda) are affected. We are working to restore the system to normal operations. Typical symptoms are missing files, strange characters in file listings, and I/O errors. On Beda, home directories and many application installations are unaffected, but data under the /c3se directory may be affected.
2013-06-28: We had some severe problems with the centre storage in the afternoon (mainly affecting Glenn, but to some extent also Beda).
2013-06-18: Network rerouting: At 08:00 Chalmers ITS will reroute all of our incoming connections, you might get logged out and have a hard time reaching us for a moment. Should be ok again by 08:30.
2013-06-11: Power failure: Due to a large power failure in Gothenburg, all our systems lost power. All running jobs were lost.

2013-05-22: The earlier power problems are resolved.
2013-05-22: Power problems: due to power problems yesterday evening, most of Glenn and parts of Beda and Svea currently lack electric power. We are working to restore power.
2013-05-20: Chalmers remote servers unavailable. The ssh remote servers at Chalmers are currently unavailable. More information here. The alternative is to use VPN. See the Chalmers IT web pages.
2013-05-07: C3SE Technical Lunch Seminar. On Tuesday May 7, 12.15 - 13.00, C3SE users are welcome to a technical seminar to discuss requirements for future HPC resources. How much memory, what type of CPUs, GPUs, etc? We will also introduce our new colleagues and introduce some new development tools at C3SE. The seminar will be in lecture hall Pascal, on the Chalmers Johanneberg Campus at the department of Mathematics. UPDATE: The slides from the presentation are available here
2013-04-23: PRACE Spring School on New and Emerging Technologies - Programming for Accelerators, Umeå, Sweden, from Tuesday, April 23, at 09.00 to Friday April 26 at 16.00 (CET), 2013. More information and registration can be found here
2013-04-10: Due to a problem with a power supply, we lost power to one rack of compute nodes on Glenn. Unfortunately, a number of jobs were lost.
2013-04-04: C3SE Introduction Lunch Seminar, 12.15 - 13.00, in lecture hall Pascal, on the Chalmers Johanneberg Campus at the department of Mathematics. Please note that attendance is mandatory for new users, in order to be allowed to start using our systems. UPDATE: Thanks to all who attended the seminar! The slides are available here, the tutorial is here and the slides from earlier seminars are available on the page C3SE introduction and technical seminars. Those slides contain plenty of examples.
2013-02-26: C3SE Introduction Lunch Seminar, 12.15 - 13.00, in lecture hall Pascal, on the Chalmers Johanneberg Campus at the department of Mathematics. Please note that attendance is mandatory for new users, in order to be allowed to start using our systems. We hand out 20 baguettes before the seminar, first-come first-serve.
2013-02-08: Glenn is back in service, and the files and directories under /c3se should now be normally available from Beda and Svea.
2013-02-08: UPDATE: The Glenn maintenance work is proceeding and we are currently testing the upgraded system. We expect to be back in production soon.
2013-02-08: FULL SYSTEM STOP ON GLENN: System stop on the Glenn cluster due to maintenance and upgrade work on the center storage system. Starting at 8:30, Glenn will be unavailable and you will not be able to log in. On Beda and Svea, the /c3se directory will be unavailable, meaning that the $SNIC_BACKUP and $SNIC_NOBACKUP directories and all applications installed under /c3se will be unavailable. The maintenance work should be completed by lunchtime.
2013-01-11: Beda is back up and running again.
2013-01-11: Due to a power problem late last night approximately half of Beda is currently offline. We have stopped the scheduling of new jobs.
2013-01-02: The issue with the centre wide filesystem is now resolved. This means that Glenn is accessible again and that it is possible to access $SNIC_BACKUP and $SNIC_NOBACKUP on Beda again.

Get support

If you have any problems with our systems or if you have suggestions or wishes, please send an e-mail to Support.png

We also offer advanced support, with things like workflow improvement, data management techniques, workflow automation via scripting, using software development, profiling and troubleshooting tools, etc. This is not aimed at coding help, but at more efficient use of HPC resources. If you'd like to discuss with us if there are ways to work more efficiently, don't hesitate to contact us at Support.png (please use a subject of "advanced support").

On Tuesdays 12:30-15:00 C3SE staff are available for consultation on HPC-related matters. We're in room O.5105B in the Origo building. Entry through Fysikgården 1 (see map), then up one floor and to the right.
