Welcome to C3SE!

C3SE is a centre for scientific and technical computing at Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg Sweden. C3SE is one of six centers in the national metacenter Swedish National Infrastructure for Computing:SNIC logo.

Current and upcoming events

2013-05-27: OpenMP course in NSC/Linköping. NSC hosts a three-day course (May 27 to May 29) in shared memory programming using OpenMP open to all PhD students, postdocs etc. affiliated with a Swedish research institute. The course will be given by SNIC parallel programming expert Joachim Hein. More information and registration here.
2013-05-28: C3SE Introduction Lunch Seminar, 12.15 - 13.00, in lecture hall Pascal, on the Chalmers Johanneberg Campus at the department of Mathematics. Please note that attendance is mandatory for new users, in order to be allowed to start using our systems.

Past events

2013-05-07: C3SE Technical Lunch Seminar. On Tuesday May 7, 12.15 - 13.00, C3SE users are welcome to a technical seminar to discuss requirements for future HPC resources. How much memory, what type of CPUs, GPUs, etc? We will also introduce our new colleagues and introduce some new development tools at C3SE. The seminar will be in lecture hall Pascal, on the Chalmers Johanneberg Campus at the department of Mathematics. UPDATE: The slides from the presentation are available here
2013-04-23: PRACE Spring School on New and Emerging Technologies - Programming for Accelerators, Umeå, Sweden, from Tuesday, April 23, at 09.00 to Friday April 26 at 16.00 (CET), 2013. More information and registration can be found here
2013-04-10: Due to a problem with a power supply, we lost power to one rack of compute nodes on Glenn. Unfortunately, a number of jobs were lost.

2013-02-26: C3SE Introduction Lunch Seminar, 12.15 - 13.00, in lecture hall Pascal, on the Chalmers Johanneberg Campus at the department of Mathematics. Please note that attendance is mandatory for new users, in order to be allowed to start using our systems. We hand out 20 baguettes before the seminar, first-come first-serve.
2013-02-08: Glenn is back in service, and the files and directories under /c3se should now be normally available from Beda and Svea.
2013-02-08: UPDATE: The Glenn maintenance work is proceeding and we are currently testing the upgraded system. We expect to be back in production soon.
2013-02-08: FULL SYSTEM STOP ON GLENN: System stop on the Glenn cluster due to maintenance and upgrade work on the center storage system. Starting at 8:30, Glenn will be unavailable and you will not be able to log in. On Beda and Svea, the /c3se directory will be unavailable, meaning that the $SNIC_BACKUP and $SNIC_NOBACKUP directories and all applications installed under /c3se will be unavailable. The maintenance work should be completed by lunchtime.
2013-01-11: Beda is back up and running again.
2013-01-11: Due to a power problem late last night approximately half of Beda is currently offline. We have stopped the scheduling of new jobs.
2013-01-02: The issue with the centre wide filesystem is now resolved. This means that Glenn is accessible again and that it is possible to access $SNIC_BACKUP and $SNIC_NOBACKUP on Beda again.
2012-12-21: The issue with the web-server that show the current health/status of our systems has been resolved
2012-12-17: C3SE and the Chalmers e-Science Centre will give a course on differential equation solving in Python using FEniCS, during December 17-18 in Gothenburg. More details can be found here.
2012-11-29: Beda is now back in production after the power failure and subsequent unplanned service stop.
2012-11-28: Due to power problems yesterday around a third of the Beda system are currently offline. We will do an unplanned service stop tomorrow morning (2012-11-29) for repairs, and the whole Beda system will be shut down for a short while. This means you will have to stop and resubmit all running jobs, otherwise they will be killed.
2012-11-28: We will perform some maintenance on Svea frontend and fileservers between 09:00 and 12:00 on wednesday the 28:th of November. Acces to Svea will be denied during that period of time. Running jobs will not be affected.
2012-11-08: C3SE Introduction Lunch Seminar, 12.15 - 13.00, in lecture hall Pascal, on the Chalmers Johanneberg Campus at the department of Mathematics. If you are an experienced Beda or Svea user this is a good opportunity to learn how to adapt to our new cluster Glenn. We handout 20 baguettes before the seminar, first-come first-serve.

2012-10-30: C3SE will host a SNIC Cloud Computing course on October the 30:th. This is a beginners course aimed for researchers at Chalmers and SNIC users. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn and use basic Amazon services. More information about the course and a link to registration can be found here. Deadline for registration is October 25:th. 2012-10-08: Allinea DDT is now available at C3SE. Allinea DDT is a very powerful debugger with MPI capabilities and is available on Beda, Glenn and Svea. To use Allinea DDT load the module allinea/ddt/3.2-24924 Documentation can be found here. We currently have 84 licenses.
2012-08-09: Chalmers will give a course on using CFD with Open Source Software. See the course web page for more information.
2012-09-20: Meet SNIC application experts from all SNIC centres. On Thursday September 20 between 14:00 and 16:00, we will arrange an application expert user meeting here in Göteborg. The event will take place in room 10:an in the chemistry building. This is a golden opportunity to talk to application experts from all fields, and to discuss simple or complicated matters related to scientific applications, computational resources, etc. Further information can be found here.
2012-09-12: PDC at KTH together with Cray will host a Cray Optimization Workshop on September 12-14, 2012. The 3 day workshop is located on site at PDC, and is structured in theoretical and hands-on sessions. Users are encouraged to bring their own codes that may be analyzed during the hands-on "code clinics". The number of seats for this workshop is limited to twenty so please do not hesitate to register quickly! 2012-09-05: UPDATE: Glenn is back in production, and the /c3se filesystem is now fully available on both Glenn and Beda.
2012-09-04: UPDATE: We are still working to resolve issues with the /c3se filesystem, and Glenn is still not up and running.
2012-09-03: 'UPDATE: Beda is back in production, with reduced file system availability. Please note that due to problems with the /c3se/-filesystem, /c3se/NOBACKUP/ and /c3se/users/, are currently not available!

UPDATE 2: We are still working on bringing Glenn back online. Note: If you're trying to log in to Glenn and get "Permission denied", that's not a problem with your username or password. The system is blocked for logins.

The slightly longer status update: The software for the file system on Glenn were updated to addressed one specific issue that we have had. However, the newer software version introduced a serious regression. We are currently working together with the file system vendor to resolve the issue.

2012-08-30: All C3SE systems are down for planned maintenance. We are currently conducting various tests in preparation for going back into production Update: Svea is back in production.
2012-08-28: Total system stop at C3SE between August 28:th and 30:th due to electrical work in our computer room. Beda, Glenn and Svea will all be stopped and no jobs will be allowed to run.
2012-08-20: Due to electrical work in the computer room building all our systems rebooted. All systems are back up. Please check your jobs!
2012-08-02: UPDATE: All compute nodes are now running and the issues with the Glenn InfiniBand network have been resolved. However, there may be problems with jobs caused by the network problems. Please check your jobs! OLD INFO: All compute nodes are now running, but there are issues with the Glenn InfiniBand network. Please check your jobs! Due to a power disruption during a thunderstorm a number of servers in the Glenn and Beda system rebooted and/or went offline. We are working to bring the systems back online.
2012-06-12: From Tuesday June 12 to Thursday June 14 our Glenn cluster will be operating at reduced capacity. We will be performing maintenance, taking a number of nodes out of service each day. This may lead to increased waiting time.
2012-05-23: NOTE: We had some issues with the Glenn file system for half an hour. It was not possible to log in.
2012-05-21: There will be a NGSSC summer school in Computational Chemical Dynamics held here in Gothenburg between May 21 and May 25. More information and how to register can be found here. A number of grants for travelling and housing for students from Swedish universities are also available. Deadline for registration is on May 11.
2012-05-15: NOTE: We had experiencing some issues with the Glenn file system. It was not possible to log in.
2012-05-15: The fifth and final seminar in the series given by C3SE this spring, "Building from Source at C3SE", was held today. The slides from the seminar can be found here.
2012-04-18: PRACE: Call for proposals to access European supercomputers now open. The PRACE Research Infrastructure now invites applications for access to high-end computing resources (Tier-0 and Tier-1). Full information is available here. C3SE can provide assistance in preparing proposals. Please contact C3SE support for more information. Deadline for proposals is May 30, 2012.
2012-04-17: The fourth in the series of 5 seminars given by C3SE this spring, "Job monitoring, understanding the queue and the scheduler", was held today. The slides from the seminar can be found here.

2012-03-21: The login-node on Beda crashed due to users using it incorrectly. System is now up and running again.
2012-03-20: The third in the series of 5 seminars given by C3SE this spring, "Using BASH for scripting and interactive work", was held today. The slides from the seminar can be found here.
2012-03-20: Do you want your code to run faster and more efficiently? Chalmers e-science centre announced CHALMERS E-SCIENCE APPLICATIONS CONSULTANCY to provide support and advice on e.g. code profiling and choice of algorithms.

2012-02-10: Update: The storage problems earlier today have now been resolved. OLD INFO: Storage problems! We are currently experiencing problems with our storage system. Files on $SNIC_BACKUP and $SNIC_NOBACKUP (under /c3se) are not available.
2012-02-01: C3SE will give 5 seminars during spring 2012 aimed at all of our users. The seminars are independent of each other. More information (date, topic etc) about the different seminars can be found on this flyer. The next seminar will take place on Tuesday March 20:th between 13:00 and 15:00.
2011-12-12: Full systems stop! Beda and Svea will be stopped for maintenance on the 12th and 13th December, no jobs will be allowed to run.
2011-11-28: Due to power-failures on the evening of the 27th, the systems were down or unable to start jobs. Beda was up at lunch-time, and Svea in the afternoon of the 29th.

2011-10-10: Centre storage, planned maintenance stop. Due to a required upgrade of our center storage ($SNIC_BACKUP, $SNIC_NOBACKUP and private areas), it will be unavailable during Monday the 10th. The upgrade will address some software bugs, and is also a prerequisite for future fixes. Further information about available storage areas can be found here.
2011-09-05: The National Graduate School in Scientific Computing (NGSSC) will give the course Computational Methods in Statistics with Applications. The course is open to all PhD students in Swedish Academia. For further info see the course page.
2011-09-06: svea, the Svea front-end was rebooted for updates.
2011-07-25: Problem with C3SE's server room infrastructure has caused a disruption on our compute resources.

A problem with the cooling system forced us to shut down almost all servers in our computer rooms.
